This plant, located at Deendayal Port Authority in Kandla, aims to address both environmental degradation and clean energy needs. For decades, this invasive shrub has threatened biodiversity in Kutch’s Banni grasslands by replacing native vegetation. Now, it will be used as a biomass feedstock to produce green methanol—a cleaner alternative to conventional fossil-fuel-based methanol used in shipping. The project is being developed by Thermax Energy in collaboration with Ankur Scientific, aligning with India’s vision of developing “green ports.” This initiative also supports global climate goals set by the International Maritime Organization, which aims for net-zero emissions in international shipping by 2050.
