Purple Passion Vine Native Plant Profile || Passiflora Incarnata
I LOVE purple passionvine! Yes, it's wild, but that's why you're here, isn't it? Here at A Wild Approach, we try to create beautiful gardens, but we also do that with native plants and native wildlife in mind. I started this garden, because I was really missing seeing butterflies around me. Growing up, I was surrounded by butterflies all the season long, but here in the city, I just had a boring old lawn with a couple invasive shrubs. I didn't see a creature in sight, except maybe an overpopulation of boxelder bugs ahaha!! So, I researched how to attract butterflies and discovered the importance of HOST PLANTS. If you're not aware, butterflies have several life stages. One of those stages is a caterpillar. Caterpillars eat leaves of very specific plants. There can be overlap, but each species of butterfly has a specific plant or group of plants that their caterpillars can eat. They can't eat any leaves that don't belong to those plants or plant groups. Passiflora incarnata is a host plant for the gulf fritillary butterfly here in east Tennessee, and I want to take you on a journey here with me and show you why this plant is so wonderful, and why I love it regardless of it's very WILD nature. Thanks for watching! Please visit maceylou.com to buy art from me, which helps me have the ability to spend more time on the channel.
