Durian Fruit Rot: Phytophthora Palmivora fungus is the most important harmful agent on durian trees in most countries in the world. Phytophthora Palmivora causes damage to many parts of the durian tree such as: leaf burn, oozing pus from the fruit stem, rot at the base of the stem and rot at the root. On the fruit, the fungus attacks the stem, the side or the bottom of the fruit, causing fruit rot. The location of the disease depends on the initial source of infection. The disease on the stem of the fruit can be caused by fungal spores from the diseased lesion penetrating directly into the fruit. The diseased lesion appearing on the side of the fruit is related to insect wounds or mechanical damage that causes rot on the side or bottom of the fruit. The diseased lesion on the bottom of the fruit is often caused by the pathogen spreading through water droplets from the diseased lesion in the tree canopy or the diseased fruit above. The diseased lesion initially appears to be waterlogged, light brown in the middle, 3-5 days later the diseased lesion develops rapidly into irregularly shaped brown spots. In humid conditions, white or gray mycelium can be seen around the lesions.
