After a safe reunion, father and daughter are on their way back to London when they encounter Charles Darnay, a French nobleman in exile, who is put on trial for espionage. He is rescued from this predicament by Sydney Carton, a lawyer who is the spitting image of Darnay and is a heavy drinker. The three become close friends, and Darnay and Lucy pledge to marry each other. Carton secretly loved Lucy, but he stepped aside out of consideration for the two of them. Just when it seemed their peaceful life would continue, Darnay returned to his homeland, France, to save a former servant from danger, and was captured by the people who had risen up during the French Revolution. Darnay was put on trial again, but a shocking crime was revealed, and he was sentenced to death.
