History of Mauritius Memories on Stones Old Sugar Mills of Mauritius

"The story of sugar cultivation in Mauritius goes back to the early years of Dutch Colonisation. After the Dutch left the island in 1710, Mahe de Labourdonnais took the initiative to develop agriculture in different parts of the island. In 1810, the island changed hands; yet again Agriculture was given a new start. Soon the crops of the "French habitation" coffee, indigo, cotton and spices gave place to sugar cane."
