Make Your Own Sharpening Stones - Lapping
As promised here is a quick look at making your own natural sharpening stones by the process of lapping. I am using modern abrasives to help things along but this can be done by passing a softer stone over a harder one. Historically this seems like the process that was used for portable honing stones. Interestingly you can often find worn lintel stones on very old houses where they have been used for sharpening household knives and tools for generations. I have something a little bit special arriving in the next couple of weeks and will be giving these stones a proper test once it arrives.
