The Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, is considered the richest temple in India. The temple is still managed by an administrative trust of the Travancore royal family. In 2011, five vaults of the temple were opened on the orders of the Supreme Court, revealing immense wealth worth approximately ₹1 lakh crore (approximately $100,000 million). However, the sixth vault remains a mystery. According to legend, this vault is protected by the serpent god and sealed with special serpent mantras. People believe that opening this door could lead to a catastrophic natural disaster or cataclysm. The sanctum sanctorum of the temple houses Lord Vishnu in a reclining posture on Sheshanaga, a serpent carved from 1,208 sacred Shaligram stones.
