During the first 50 years of the 20th century, the most notable aspect of Chilean women's history was the so-called "women's emancipation," understood as the still-ongoing process of women's progressive entry into the world of work and culture, and their increasingly active participation in politics. This also included overcoming their traditional role in the home. In 1913, the first organized women's movements appeared in Chile: clubs and associations of women who sought to improve the situation of women and democratize society. The main reason for this "awakening" was the growing awareness among a significant number of women of the limitations imposed on their education, at least among the middle classes. In this chapter, we encounter Inés Echeverría Bello (Iris), Mariana Cox Stuven, Teresa Wilms Montt, and Gabriela Mistral.
