August 1, 2020 The Sonic Express is currently the second fastest express train on JR conventional lines and the fastest in Kyushu (distance traveled divided by time required). The first place is the Thunderbird, and the Shinkansen is faster than it, but the driver's cab is blocked off and you cannot see the view in front (Shinkansen trains before the 200 series could do this). The next best train for seeing the view in front is the Wide View Shinano, but it is ranked 18th out of all JR trains, and the Sonic is by far the fastest in terms of low speed.
