The Markovic Affair The body of Stevica Markovic, a Belgrade native and personal bodyguard to the famous actor Alain Delon, was found at a landfill in Élancourt near Paris. Markovic had been brutally beaten and killed by a shot to the back of the head. In addition to his bodyguard duties, he was also in a secret love affair with the actor's wife, Nathalie Delon. The key lead in the investigation was Markovic's letters to his brother in Yugoslavia, in which he stated that his life was in danger and that Alain Delon and his close friend, the Corsican mafia boss François Marcantoni, were directly responsible. The investigation soon revealed that Markovic had organized and secretly photographed the French political and artistic elite at private sex parties with the intention of blackmailing them. Factions within the French secret service exploited the situation and leaked doctored, explicit photographs allegedly showing Claude Pompidou, the wife of former Prime Minister Georges Pompidou. The goal of this dirty political sabotage was to destroy Pompidou's reputation and prevent his candidacy for President. Despite a massive scandal that shook the whole of France, the plot failed. Georges Pompidou won the election by a landslide and became President of France, after which the affair was covered up. Alain Delon spent hours undergoing interrogation, his wife Nathalie was also questioned about their affair, and Marcantoni spent some time in custody. However, all were released due to a lack of evidence. The case was officially closed, and Stevica Markovic's killer was never found.
