February 1980 - Galaxian - Now in Color!

I swear it's not a Space Invaders clone. This time you're the one invading I think. Developed by Namco and published for arcades in North America in February 1980 by Midway Manufacturing, Galaxian is a shooter in the vein of the titanically popular Space Invaders. Like several popular arcade games at the time, Galaxian focuses on the player's ability to line up shots against enemies while avoiding their attacks in turn. What makes this a special example in a very saturated genre are the advanced visuals, featuring color sprites and a scrolling background, as well as the way in which the enemies come to you to attack, rather than passively shooting back at you. These innovations make Galaxian stand out from its competition, which made it the first of many Namco arcade hits. Like many popular arcade releases, this game has been ported to many systems and is included in tons of compilations, so I chances are you have a way to play it.
