Despite their short-lived career, despite the band's internal problems, and despite having a rather questionable second album, the Stone Roses mark a kind of turning point in British music. Their complex and eventful history is a tale of free-spirited, carefree kids who sounded fresh in a key time and place, which was Manchester in the late 1980s. After years of promotion and ups and downs, six years later they finally released their first album in 1989, one of the best albums in UK history. But it wasn't all rosy.
