President Donald Trump said Tuesday that he intends to remove U.S. sanctions imposed on Türkiye under the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA), describing the move as part of efforts to strengthen ties with the NATO ally. Speaking alongside Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara, Trump said he does not want to sanction "friends" and added that he is working with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on the issue. Trump also said he would "certainly consider" restoring Türkiye's participation in the F-35 fighter jet program, praising Ankara's relationship with Washington.
