NAPOLI - Complesso Monumentale di Sant'Anna dei Lombardi

The church of the Monumental Complex of Sant'Anna dei Lombardi is a monumental church in Naples located in Piazza Monteoliveto. The church was founded in 1411 by Gorello Origlia, protonotary of King Ladislaus of Durazzo, who sponsored the construction of a small church called Santa Maria di Monteoliveto, entrusted to the Olivetan fathers. The building was subjected to radical expansion works by Alfonso II of Aragon, King of Naples, and soon became one of the favorites of the Aragonese court. The works inside by Benedetto da Maiano, Antonio Rossellino and Giorgio Vasari make the church one of the most important testimonies of the Tuscan Renaissance in Naples. The church bears witness to the close link between the city and Tuscany, demonstrating that already at that time a dense Florentine "colony" of merchants, artisans and bankers had settled in Naples; It is no coincidence that the negotiations between Antonio Piccolomini and the sculptors Antonio Rossellino and Benedetto da Maiano on the construction and decoration of the chapel of the same name in the church were carried out by the Strozzi family, who had a branch of their bank in Naples through which they made payments to the artists. In the 17th century the church was transformed by Gaetano Sacco. Among the side chapels, the Correale stands out, with architecture inspired by the style of Giuliano da Maiano which houses sculptures by his brother Benedetto; the Tolosa, by Giuliano da Maiano with sculptures from the Della Robbia workshop and frescoes by Cristoforo Scacco from Verona; and the Piccolomini chapel, among the most successful of the Florentine styles. In the others, however, there are tombs of the Neapolitan nobility of the 15th century with fresco decorations by Giuseppe Simonelli, Baldassarre Aloisi, Nicola Malinconico, Francesco Solimena and others. The presbytery was added in the 16th century and inside the four chapels that characterize it, a real anthology of sculpture from the 15th and 16th centuries is preserved. In fact, there are terracotta works by Guido Mazzoni, sculptures by Antonio Rossellino, Benedetto da Maiano, Giovanni da Nola, Pedro de Rubiales and others. The high altar was made based on a design by Giovan Domenico Vinaccia by Bartolomeo and Pietro Ghetti in the second half of the 17th century, while at the right corner of the transept, some corridors lead to the Vasari sacristy. The Old Sacristy, or Vasari sacristy, former refectory of the Olivetan monastery which sees the presence of frescoes by the Arezzo master with allegories (1544) in the vault and along the lower band of the walls, 17th-century furniture with wooden stalls decorated with inlays made by Fra Giovanni da Verona between 1506 and 1510 and already used for the Tolosa chapel.
