It was built to refine gold from the Western Australian goldfields and produce gold coins. 1900–1931: The mint produced more than 106 million gold sovereigns and hundreds of thousands of half-sovereigns used throughout the British Empire. 1931: Production of gold sovereigns ceased when Britain abandoned the gold standard, but the mint continued refining gold bullion. 1970: Ownership transferred from the British Government to the Government of Western Australia. 1987: Gold Corporation was established, allowing the mint to produce and market Australian precious metal coins worldwide. 2003: A modern manufacturing facility was opened beside the original historic building.
