I Finally Finished the $600 Chicken Coop… Here’s How It Turned Out

Part 2 of the chicken coop build is here — and this one definitely did not go exactly to plan. The original challenge was to build a backyard chicken coop for under $600. In this episode, I finish the roof rafters, add the roofing sheets and ridge cap, move the coop into place, build the outdoor run, add the gate, chicken wire and roof sheets, and finally get it safe enough for the chickens. Between rain in the Adelaide Hills, my phone constantly going flat, missing chunks of the build, and needing more materials than expected, this project ended up taking way longer — and costing more — than I planned. I failed the $600 challenge, but I’m still really proud of how the coop turned out. It’s solid, safe, practical, and I definitely couldn’t buy something like this for what I spent.
