Passacaglia is a musical form popular around the 17th century. This piece is a variation by Halvorsen based on the sixth movement, "Passacaglia," from Handel's Harpsichord Suite No. 7. That said, Halvorsen's original character is so strong that it could almost be described as a composition inspired by Handel's melody.
