Join me for a real drive across Shanghai — from Jiading in the northwest all the way out to Chongming Island, one of the few places near this megacity where you can still find open farmland, quiet lanes, and genuine countryside. This wasn't a planned "scenic drive" — we made the trip out to Chongming to pick up our parents, and the route turned out so peaceful I had to share it. Leaving the city behind, you cross the Yangtze estuary through the Shanghai Yangtze River Tunnel & Bridge (长江隧桥) — a ~25 km crossing that first dips under the river to Changxing Island, then rises onto a long cable-stayed bridge over to Chongming. Chongming (崇明) is China's third-largest island and Shanghai's designated "eco-island" — an alluvial island in the mouth of the Yangtze, known for its farmland, tree-lined country roads, and the Dongtan wetlands, where over a million migratory birds pass through each year.
