I thought giving them space was the kind thing to do. A few missed calls. A few unanswered messages. Nothing unusual. So I showed them space. Days turned into weeks. They stopped asking where I was. I stopped explaining. The way she folded a napkin during dinner and avoided my eyes stayed with me longer than it should have. Something felt different, but I didn’t question it at first. I showed them space when conversations became shorter. I showed them space when silence arrived early. I showed them space when every room felt slightly colder. I showed them space because it seemed easier. I showed them space until the distance no longer needed an excuse. Now, nobody mentions it. And somehow, that says everything.
