More armed police on streets of UK capital

(3 Aug 2016) London's police force is putting more armed officers on the streets, the force's chief said on Wednesday. Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe said on Wednesday that the number and the visibility of the officers to protect the public from all manner of threats is increasing. Hogan-Howe suggested the move was a response to recent attacks in France, Belgium and Germany, "We'd be complacent and foolish if we were to not check our tactics," said Hogan-Howe, praising the force's officers as "brave, well trained, well equipped and able to respond to anything that's thrown at them." The training of the officers was announced earlier this year and their deployment came after Hogan-Howe warned recently an attack in Britain was a case of "when, not if." Londoners are proud that most police do not carry guns, and the fundamental principle remains unchanged. Even with the changes, most of London's 31,000 police officers will not be armed.
