The porch light flickers above number four Privet Drive. The street is empty. A bundle lies on the cold step, wrapped in a thick blanket. Vernon Dursley pulls open the door in his dressing gown, expecting a milkman or a stray cat. He looks down and sees a baby on his front step in the cold. Vernon kneels. He lifts the corner of the blanket and finds a letter tucked beside the child's head. The seal is purple wax. He breaks it with his thumb. The handwriting is fine and looped. He reads it. Lily is dead. James is dead. The boy survived. The boy needs a home. Vernon stands in the porch light for a long minute. He does not call for Petunia. He looks at the baby's face. A small red scar sits on the forehead. The child is breathing slowly. The child is alive. Vernon Dursley is not a kind man. He sells drills at Grunnings and he goes home. Then he eats his dinner and reads his paper. That is his life. But Vernon has one rule above all others. Family is family. You do not leave family on a doorstep. You do not, in his world, leave a child out in the cold. His father taught him that. Vernon picks the baby up before he thinks about it. The decision is made before Petunia even comes down the stairs. He carries Harry inside. Closes the front door with his hip. Sets the bundle on the kitchen table. Switches the kettle on out of habit. Petunia comes down in her slippers and sees Vernon. Sees the bundle and the letter. Her face drains of all its colour. The baby’s eyes are the wrong shape but the cheekbones are her sister's. Petunia (sharp): "What is that?" Vernon (quiet): "It's the boy. Lily's boy." Petunia (cold): "Take him to an orphanage. Tonight." Vernon (firm): "He is your blood. He stays." Petunia (angry): "If he stays, I leave." Vernon (firm): "I will not be a Dursley man who throws away family. Not even for you." The kitchen goes very quiet. Petunia stares at her husband. Vernon stares back. Something in her face closes like a shutter. She turns and walks back up the stairs. The door clicks shut above them. Vernon stands holding the baby in his kitchen and knows his marriage will never sound the same again. He loves Harry from this moment on. Petunia hates the boy from the same moment. Both feelings are real. Neither will ever change. The years pass in the small house at Privet Drive. Harry grows up under two roofs that share the same address. Vernon does the bedtime stories. He sits on the edge of Harry's bed and reads the same battered book of fairy tales over and over. He is not soft. His hand on Harry's shoulder is heavy. He does the school runs in the rain. He makes Harry's lunches with brown bread and one biscuit on the side. He teaches him to ride a bike on the pavement outside Number Four. Vernon never says he loves Harry. He shows it instead in small steady ways every day. Magic terrifies him. A teacup floats across the kitchen when Harry is four and Vernon sits down hard in a chair. A flower blooms out of season in the garden when Harry is six and Vernon writes it down in the small notebook he keeps in the shed. He starts writing letters to Dumbledore. The first one is two short questions about floating cups. The reply comes back by owl two days later. After that, the letters become a slow correspondence between Headmaster and Muggle. Vernon asks about wards. About magical first aid. About what to do if a stranger calls at the door. Dumbledore answers every one. The notebook grows fat with pasted-in replies. Petunia does not strike Harry. She does worse. She acts like he is not in the house. Sets four places at the table and forgets which chair is his. Never touches him. Not once in ten years. Harry grows up loved by his uncle and unseen by his aunt. Dudley watches everything. He has Petunia's whole heart and half of his father's, and the missing half goes to a boy with a scar. He loves his father deeply. He is confused about Harry. Petunia whispers to Dudley at bedtime that Harry is the reason their family is sick.
