The Tea Museum was established by Tata Tea in 2004 at Nullatanni Estate, Munnar. The Museum presently run by KDHP Company Private Limited since 2005, tells the eventful story of Munnar; The highlights of the museum include old machineries for tea manufacture that were imported from the UK and other parts of the world , photographs of early plantation life and display of other artifacts, that throw light on the efforts by pioneering planters in the early twentieth century. These are the people who dared to explore this difficult terrain with minimal equipment and little resource. There is also a 28 minute well prepared documentary, which takes the visitor through the evolution of the plantation set up and culture at Munnar. A Rotorvane machine, an old tea roller used in the Orthodox type tea processing, would be interesting for even those not associated with the tea industry. There is a mini CTC tea manufacturing unit in the museum, where visitors can get to know the method of tea processing. However, the real treat is the tea tasting section, where one can see & taste a variety of conventional & flavored teas and learn about the different facets of the tea brew. And if you think that the displays are confined to just tea-making, you’re wrong. Like the ‘Pelton Wheel’, that was used at a mini power generation plant set up at the Kanniamallay Estate in 1920s, old parts of a monorail carriage and light railway, as well as cine clippings from the archives about a ropeway system, all portray the earnest efforts at infrastructure development during the early days at Munnar. The journey that started then has been continued by successive companies in propelling Munnar region to the status of a well-known tea producing center in the country & the world.
