Army Defends Justice Crack Arrest + Soldier Assault Sparks Outrage + Calabar Protest Turns Violent

The Armed Forces of Nigeria has come out strongly in defence of its actions against activist Justice Mark Chidiebere, publishing an editorial arguing that social media engagement with frontline troops can threaten national security. The Federal High Court of Nigeria in Abuja has ordered the remand of Justice Chidiebere Mark in the custody of the Department of State Services over alleged cybercrime offences tied to his viral video. Despite this, supporters have taken to the streets in protest, demanding his release and raising concerns about free speech and due process. In a related development, outrage is growing after a soldier assaulted Olalekan Fakoyejo, an editor with TheCable, during a traffic incident in Ikeja. Fakoyejo was reportedly slapped after criticising soldiers over road congestion, sparking renewed debate about military conduct in civilian spaces. Shifting focus to insecurity, tensions are high in Ekpoma after gunmen killed businessman Justice Oshioke during a failed kidnap attempt. The incident, which reportedly occurred just hours before his child’s dedication, has intensified criticism of security conditions in the state, despite assurances from Monday Okpebholo that Edo remains safe. Political tensions are also surfacing, with former governor Ben Ayade claiming that Bola Ahmed Tinubu asked him to withdraw his senatorial ambition. In an emotional statement, Ayade expressed frustration over what he described as years of political sidelining, triggering mixed reactions online. Meanwhile, protests in Calabar turned violent after students of the University of Cross River State accused hospitals of medical negligence following a fatal accident. Demonstrators vandalised parts of General Hospital Mary Slessor, while police responded with tear gas as tensions escalated. On a brighter note, there is progress in aviation. Victor Attah International Airport and Gateway International Airport have both launched international flight operations. In Akwa Ibom State, Governor Umo Eno flagged off the inaugural international flight from Uyo to Accra, describing it as a major economic milestone. The event was attended by Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo, who highlighted the airport’s potential as a regional hub. Similarly, Ogun State marked its first international operation with pilgrims departing through Gateway International Airport to Saudi Arabia, with Governor Dapo Abiodun calling it a defining moment for the state’s development.
