The young men jump in a circle from a standing position, keeping their backs straight and never bending their knees. The higher the jump, the more popularity they gain, especially among young women. This is not just entertainment — it is a mating dance, a celebration of bravery, and a marker of warrior identity. The moran wear lion skins as a mark of heroism; traditionally, only a warrior who had killed a lion could wear its pelt. They sing songs based on cattle raids and battles, with one group chanting a phrase before the next group responds in echo — no musical instruments accompany them. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ THE DANCING RITUAL IS AN ESSENTIAL PART OF SAMBURU CULTURE: At a wedding celebration, different age groups dance separately. Married women unite in one group, moving with feverous energy while wearing traditional red marriage necklaces (mporro), animal skins, and red ochre. Elders unite to dance and sing their own songs, sometimes reminiscing about when they were young warriors themselves.
