To Master Irineu, as he would later be known in history, a doctrine of Christian and eclectic character was revealed, bringing together Catholic, Spiritist, esoteric, caboclo (mixed-race), and indigenous traditions around the ritual use of the ancient tea known to the Inca people as ayahuasca (wine of the souls) and which he named Santo Daime. Widely used among indigenous peoples of the Western Amazon, the beverage is obtained by cooking two native plants of the rainforest, the Jagube vine (Banisteriopsis caapi) and the queen leaf (Psychotria viridis). It has entheogenic properties, that is, it produces an expansion of consciousness responsible for the experience of contact with the spiritual plane, through the inner encounter with our *True Self*. Master Irineu claimed to have received his teachings directly from Our Lady of the Conception, who appeared to him one of the first times he drank the brew in the Brasiléia region of Acre.
