The first TWO voyages around the world | Map Men | History Teacher Reacts

Check out my new original content channel!    / @mrterryoriginals   This episode from Map Men ‪@JayForeman‬ compares the harrowing, disastrous circumnavigation voyages of Ferdinand Magellan in the 16th century and Sir Francis Drake later that century. While Magellan’s expedition is credited as the first to circle the globe, the journey was fraught with mutiny, starvation, and his own death in the Philippines, leaving only a fraction of his crew to return home. Drake, commissioned by Queen Elizabeth to essentially act as a state-sanctioned pirate against Spanish interests, faced similar perils, including harsh weather and the loss of his own ships. Ultimately, the video concludes that while Magellan’s voyage historically holds the title, it is highly likely that his enslaved translator, Enrique, was actually the first human to complete a full journey around the planet, having returned to his probable homeland in Southeast Asia after traveling across the world from the opposite direction.
