It was once the breadbasket of the region. So how did it become the worst humanitarian crisis on earth? Using satellite imagery and geospatial analysis, we measured the health of Sudan's vegetation across the country — comparing 2023 to 2025 at the peak growing season. What we found was staggering: nearly 39,000 square kilometres of farmland destroyed. An area larger than Switzerland. Gone. This is the story of how climate, economic collapse, and conflict combined to systematically dismantle one of Africa's most productive agricultural systems — and what it means for the 25 million people now facing hunger.
