Is it possible to harvest vegetables from one bed from early spring, all summer long, into winter and the following spring? Of course! In this episode, I show you the legume patch I described in my book "The Vegetable Garden Plan." Instead of empty spaces left by harvested vegetables (like radishes), I introduce a relay race of plants and intercropping. See how brilliantly specific varieties of vegetables, herbs, and flowers work together in one space! 🌱 Vegetable and plant varieties featured in this video: ▪️Sugar peas: the purple 'Shiraz' and the very prolific 'Oregon Sugar Pod' (climbing on natural supports made of dogwood shoots). ▪️Lettuces: butterhead 'Quattro Stagioni', leafy 'New Red Fire', and the beautiful romaine, speckled like a trout, 'Forellenschluss'. ▪️Pole beans: the reliable 'Cobra' and the long, yellow 'Ramdor' (planted from seedlings on poles). ▪️Companion plants: savory (an ideal companion for beans), dwarf marigold, and borage (attracting pollinators). 👨‍🌾 Important care tips from this episode: 1. Mounding legumes, i.e., covering the pea rows with soil, stimulates root development and stabilizes the plants. 2. Seedlings instead of sowing. Planting pole beans from ready-made seedlings, rather than directly into the ground, is the best and most effective defense against slugs. 3️⃣ Smooth replacement, meaning using every freed-up inch (e.g., after radishes) for supporting plants or other vegetables (kale for a winter harvest).
