The festival features the procession of Lord Jagannath, along with Lord Balarama and Goddess Subhadra, on three massive wooden chariots. Hundreds of thousands, even millions, of people participate in pulling these chariots from the Shri Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple, a distance of approximately three kilometers. Hindus believe this is a manifestation of Lord Jagannath's descent to bestow blessings upon all people; anyone is welcome to pay homage during this festival. Rath Yatra is widely regarded as one of the world's largest religious processions, filled with an atmosphere of faith, vibrant colors, and pilgrims from all over the globe. However, the sheer number of people gathered in one location can lead to accidents. In 2026, there were reports of stampedes resulting in fatalities. This incident was heartbreaking for many people, and I was also at the event on the day it happened.
