If the handle doesn't reach the vertical position when closing the window, or if it does, it requires considerable effort, it's time to adjust the window. Incompletely closing the window handle results in the seal not being pressed firmly against the frame, causing a draft. The handle breaks from excessive strain, and replacing it with a new one won't solve the problem. Let's figure out why this happens. If you open the window, press the latch, and turn the handle to the closed position, there's no resistance; the locking mechanism operates easily, and the handle returns to the vertical position without any problem. If this is the case, the problem isn't with the lock mechanism. Note that the rack and pinion mechanism of the lock operates trunnions, which rise and engage the stops when the lock is closed. These trunnions regulate the sash pressure. Remember that all trunnions must be in the same position. There's also a trunnion on the rear side of the window sash, but it drops down when the handle is closed. Now imagine that the window has sagged over time, meaning it's sunk downward under its considerable weight. This causes the front trunnions to barely reach the stops, failing to provide the necessary pressure, while the rear trunnion, conversely, is too far behind the stop. This causes excessive force—trying to bring the handle to a vertical position when closing also forces the window sash into the correct position. Naturally, no handle can withstand such force for long. The solution is simple: adjust the sash vertically with the vertical screw on the bottom hinge, or, more simply, lift it upward. But don't overdo it! Turn the screw half a turn, try closing it, and repeat until you find the correct position. It's also worth checking that the stops aren't loose. If the lock mechanism is stiff when the sash is open and the handle is difficult to turn vertically, then the problem is with the mechanism, or more precisely, the sash. The force is transmitted through two angles, one of which, due to the deformation, has become more than 90 degrees, and the other has become less than 90 degrees. As a result, the rack jams. I managed to solve this problem as follows. At the bottom of the window sash, on the end, there is a grooved strip. Loosen the screw that secures it. Press the tab and rotate the handle down to a vertical position. The handle should turn easily. Leaving the handle in this position, tighten the screw, securing the strip.
