I’m walking through the quietest capital I’ve ever seen in Southeast Asia. There are no street vendors shouting, no smoke from charcoal grills, no smell of food drifting through the air like a capital city should have. Everything here seems to exist somewhere between “about to begin” and “not yet ready,” as if the whole country is still learning how to breathe. I tried to find the kind of street food people in this region are familiar with, but there was almost none. The few restaurants that exist charge prices so high that most locals can’t afford them. A single plate of rice—something that looks ordinary—costs about the same as a day’s wage here. It made me wonder: how can a newborn nation create “its own flavor” when food itself is still something borrowed? This is a country that has only just begun, and beginnings are never easy. I’m not sure if they’re building a nation or just trying to protect it from being swallowed again. Everything looks simple, but carries a quiet bitterness outsiders might not see.
