Survival and Bushcraft in the Wilderness - Catch and Cook - Bark Shelter in the Rain
Bushcraft and survival trip for 3 days. I imagined a fishing trip gone wrong. What if I had to extend my stay involuntary with just the gear I normally have in my bag for an afternoon out fishing. A pot is mostly with me when I don't bring a thermos. And always knife and ferro rod. Rain gear when I remember. 99% of survival shelters I see online are not realistic IMO. You have to make them fast and they need to be functional. Without a lot of cordage, not to heavy material, and surely not made to be pretty etc. Without axe and even a knife. I didn't expect my Bark Lavvu to be completely water proof. But to my big surprise it was. Shingles principle in roofing did the job. I did the shelter without cutting, sawing and lashing anything in just under 2 hours. When doing a shelter like this make sure there are about 8 - 10 dead spruce trees within sight of the shelter location. If not the building process will take twice as long. Adding in other tree species with the bark is of course also an option. But one type of bark makes the roofing process more consistent. Start with big pieces of bark, and then use smaller pieces to cover up holes. Just make sure to start from the bottom and up when you build the roof. Every single shingle need to overlap the previous from above, like I show in the video. I had my doubts about this shelters resistance against wind. We had a storm last week and I went back to the location to check on the shelter. It was still standing. Only one small narrow piece of bark had moved in the roof. I think the explanation is the shape of the shelter and the weight of it all. Bark pieces was pretty heavy and all together they put some serious weight down that locks the roof in place. Had some luck fishing this time. Got a lot of fish so had plenty of protein to eat. Please understand I don't want to record all the fishing and cooking because it gets to repetitive in the finished movie. And the endless hours of tedious water purification. End of May and early June was the coldest I ever experienced. Temps during this trip were from +3C to +18C. Almost reached +20C on my way back to the car the last day. I think I'm done surviving for a while now. All of you that missed my cooking will not be disappointed in upcoming videos. Thank you very much for watching!
