How Playgrounds Shape Motor Development, School Readiness, and Child Health

Can a playground influence a child's brain development, school readiness, and lifelong health? In this lecture, we explore why playgrounds are far more than recreational spaces—they are essential developmental infrastructure. Using evidence from developmental pediatrics, neuroscience, public health, and an important study conducted in low-resource preschool settings, we discuss how playground access influences: Gross and fine motor development Executive functions and motor planning School readiness Participation and inclusion Developmental equity Early identification of motor difficulties Practical interventions for clinicians, educators, and policymakers This lecture also connects the research findings with current international recommendations from WHO, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and contemporary evidence on Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD), active play, and early childhood development.
