Tai Chi “Whirling Arms” Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners

Moving backward can feel awkward, unstable, or disconnected if the feet, waist, arms, and stances are not working together. This is where Tai Chi can be incredibly useful, because it teaches you how to retreat with control instead of simply stepping back and hoping your balance follows. Inside Rooted Alchemy, we build these skills through weekly Tai Chi classes, including Beijing 24 training, stance work, stepping drills, and detailed breakdowns of movements like Whirling Arms and Repulse the Monkey so you can feel more stable, coordinated, and confident in your practice. If you want a clear, guided way to improve your balance and movement from the ground up, click the link below and start your free 7-day trial 👉 https://www.skool.com/rootedalchemy 📥 Business Inquiries [email protected] 🌱 Today's Practice: This section introduces whirling arms (also known as repulse the monkey), a Tai Chi movement focused on coordinating the body from the center, where the waist drives motion and the arms follow. Emphasis is placed on smooth backward stepping, maintaining balance through proper stances, and preserving central equilibrium (jong ding). By integrating upper and lower body through stepping, turning, and arm patterns, the practice builds coordination, stability, and fluidity while reinforcing core Tai Chi principles like open/close, empty/full, and movement from center. 0:00 – 0:54 Introduction 0:54 – 2:57 Beijing 24 Form Principles 2:57 – 7:26 Yang Style Whirling Arms 7:26 – 10:16 Chen Style Whirling Arms 10:16 – 14:13 Practice Tips ☯️ Who Am I: “Student Always, Teacher Sometimes.” This mindset sets the tone for my lifelong journey in Chinese internal arts. I am a Tai Chi/Qigong practitioner and teacher with over 15 years of dedicated study, beginning in Southern California with Praying Mantis Kung Fu and Yang Style Tai Chi, and later continuing in Seattle under Andrew T. Dale, where I immersed myself in Chen Style Tai Chi, Bagua Zhang, and the internal principles that still guide my practice today. In 2007, I moved to Beijing, China, spending eight years training intensively with masters Zhang Wei Dong and Liu Zu Guang, refining my Tai Chi, Bagua Zhang, internal body mechanics, and traditional training methods while also studying Shuai Jiao and Da Bei Quan. During this time, I became the first foreigner awarded a Shuai Jiao Coach’s Certificate in China and co-founded the Guang Wu Shuai Jiao Association to help spread traditional Chinese martial arts internationally. My teaching emphasizes authentic Tai Chi and Qigong—rooted in structure, breath, intention, and internal alignment—to support sustainable practice, real skill development, and long-term vitality. Above all, stay rooted and remain open🌱
