How a Muslim Handles Differences of Opinion - Ustadz Rizal Yuliar Putrananda, Lc Disagreements are inevitable; they are part of Allah's decree that must be applied in this life. Disagreements are differences of opinion. Differences of opinion in Islam are divided into two categories: those that are fundamental, which are not permissible. This includes differences in aqidah (belief) and methodology for a person. Second, differences of a branch nature, such as differences in the jurisprudence of worship. An example of a permissible difference of opinion, as mentioned above, is the variation in understanding the jurisprudence of prayer. For example: When moving from one rak'ah to the next, a person praying should rest their palms (some understand this by clenching their fists, while others spread their palms). Differences of opinion and arguments are common in society. Therefore, it is important to be open-minded about the differing opinions of scholars who are used to strengthen a particular ruling. Because differences of opinion will always exist, especially regarding the principle of faith. A Muslim who believes in monotheism should refrain from committing shirk (polytheism). If anyone disagrees with him in this matter, their disagreement is not considered. This is why conflict arose between the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his people. The Prophet called them to monotheism, while the Quraysh chose to associate partners with Him. Some prominent preachers today often comment, "Ikhtilaf is a blessing." Therefore, this statement must be elaborated. If it is meant within the realm of fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence), then we agree on its broad scope. However, in terms of fundamental beliefs, this statement is incorrect. A person who believes in monotheism would not ask for forgiveness from the dead, let alone kneel in worship beside them. So how can the worshippers of Allah unite with the worshippers of the grave?! The differences in Islam were explained in broad terms by the speaker, allowing the participants to benefit from addressing differences in Islam (read: differences in understanding texts/proofs). This includes the differences between sharia and fiqh in Islamic law. We sometimes encounter differences of opinion among scholars. Who is a scholar? Let's look at the general definition of a scholar: a scholar is someone who is knowledgeable and masters the Book of Allah, the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad, knows the traditions of the Companions, understands the interpretation of the Quran, is competent in deriving rulings from texts, and other matters known among scholars. Returning to the topic, what is the wisdom of differences in Islam? Is it appropriate to say that differences are a blessing without any efforts for unity outlined in the Quran and Sunnah? Differences are beautiful when all those in dispute refer their case to the Quran and Hadith based on the understanding of the Companions of the Prophet Muhammad, because they were the Prophet's disciples.
