Neither Settler Nor Native: The Making and Unmaking of Permanent Minorities with Mahmood Mamdani

The Other Universals Consortium and CODESRIA hosted a webinar with Professor Mahmood Mamdani about his new book Neither Settler Nor Native: The Making and Unmaking of Permanent Minorities. The webinar was moderated by Professor Suren Pillay (CHR, UWC) and Dr. Godwin Murunga (CODESRIA). The book was discussed by a wide range of panelists, including Dr Mshaï Mwangola (African Leadership Centre), Professor Adom Getachew (University of Chicago), Dr. Raef Zreik (Tel Aviv University), and Z. Pallo Jordan (Former South African Minister of Arts and Culture). About: Making the radical argument that the nation-state was born of colonialism, this book calls us to rethink political violence and reimagine political community beyond majorities and minorities. About the Other Universals Webinar Series The Other Universals consortium is hosting a series of webinars. These talks draw on political and aesthetic traditions and movements of thought and practice. They examine radical traditions and ideas of expansive citizenship that have emerged in the colonial and postcolonial modern. Particular focus is on idioms of difference, which define insider and outsider, majority and minority, how these emerged, were negotiated and transcended.
