Few bands manage to traverse decades while maintaining not only relevance but also the passion and energy that propelled them at the start of their careers. Europe is one of those rarities. About to land in Brazil once again as one of the headliners of Monsters of Rock, the Swedish group promises to ignite the audience with their powerful hard rock, timeless classics, and a performance that only the experience of over 40 years on the road can provide. Amidst preparations for the festival — and also for a new studio album — drummer Ian Haugland spoke with me about the expectations for the show, the band's evolution, the legacy of The Final Countdown (1986), and their plans for the future. With good humor and great candor, Ian recalled significant moments in their career, such as the tour with Glenn Hughes in Japan, commented on the fans' reception to Europe's more recent material, and revealed that 2026 will be a year of celebrations — with a new album, documentary, and the commemoration of the 40th anniversary of their greatest success. But before that, Europe is preparing for another explosive encounter with the Brazilian audience. "It's going to be amazing," the drummer promises.
