Lord of the Lost is a German gothic metal band formed in Hamburg in 2007 by singer and guitarist Chris Harms. Initially a solo project, it evolved into a full band with members including bassist Class Grenayde, drummer Niklas Kahl, keyboardist Gared Dirge, and guitarist Pi Stoffers. Known for their provocative lyrics, elaborate live performances, and a blend of gothic, industrial, and dark rock elements, they’ve released eight studio albums, with Blood & Glitter (2022) hitting number one in Germany. Their 2023 covers album, Weapons of Mass Seduction, via Napalm Records, showcases their versatility. Renowned for high-energy shows at festivals like Wacken Open Air, they’ve built a dedicated global following. “Smalltown Boy” is a cover of Bronski Beat’s 1984 synth-pop classic, featured on Lord of the Lost’s Weapons of Mass Seduction, released on December 29, 2023, via Napalm Records. Written by Jimmy Somerville, Steve Bronski, and Lawrence Cole, and produced by Benjamin Mundigler and Chris Harms, this 4:59-minute rendition transforms the original into a gothic metal anthem with heavy riffs, pulsating drums, and Harms’ emotive vocals. The lyrics, like “You leave in the morning with everything you own in a little black case / Alone on a platform, the wind and the rain on a sad and lonely face,” retain the song’s poignant narrative of a young man fleeing homophobia, amplified by the band’s dramatic intensity.
