New York City's R142 subway cars and Warsaw's Alstom Metropolis 98B metro trains might be thousands of miles apart, but they share a surprising technical connection: both use a nearly identical Alstom IGBT-VVVF ONIX propulsion system, and as a result, they sound almost identical when accelerating and braking! Both fleets were introduced in the early 2000s and rely on propulsion systems that convert DC current from the third rail into three-phase AC power for their traction motors. This generates a distinctive high-pitched whine that subway riders in New York know well. In NYC, this sound has become one of the most recognizable features of the subway system, especially on the 2, 4, and 5 lines where the R142s are common. However, many people are unaware that the same sound can also be heard in Warsaw, where Alstom-built Metropolis 98B trains serve Metro Line M1!
