Should you buy a Toyota 4Runner? Why is this ancient truck so reliable? A Toyota Master Diagnostic Technician goes into a deep dive into the engine of the 4runner to find why it's called Ancient and why it's reliable. In this brand new series on my channel I will take you on a Journey of discovery if you would on the very popular 5th generation Toyota 4runner expanding from 2010-2021. I will go over most of the major components of the 4runner so we can find out together what makes this truck ancient and what makes it reliable. In the first part of this series I will be focusing on the 4runner's engine the 1GR-FE 4.0L V6. I will first go over some history of the roots of this engine which takes us back to the previous generation 4runner and IT's 4.0L 1GR-FE and even though they share the same name, the engine in those 2 generations is very different for the most part. Then I'll show you the evolution of the old 4.0L engine to the new one and what changes and what remained the same. I'll also discuss a question that many viewers have asked which is how did Toyota manage to keep the 4runner ancient engine emissions compliant since it's technically been around since 2010 and many other cars have moved on to newer more complicated and potentially less reliable engines. Towards the end of this video I will take you on a tour of the engine bay of the 5th generation 4runner identifying some of the key components so curious viewers or owners would know a little bit more about the awesome engine in this truck. In part 2 of this series I will take you on a Journey on the 5th generation transmission and how that remained one of the very last trucks offered with only a 5 speed automatic transmission.
