I've Lived In The UK For Over 20 Years | It's Not A Scam
Africans in the UK often find themselves caught in one of the biggest debates within the African diaspora today. Is the UK still worth it? Has life in Britain become harder than people expected? Or are some of the loudest criticisms of the UK coming from people who simply failed to achieve the goals they set for themselves? Across social media, podcasts and everyday conversations, many Africans in the UK regularly describe Britain as a scam, claim there are no opportunities left and argue that life abroad is no longer worth the sacrifice. Yet there are others who strongly disagree. For many members of the African diaspora, including Ghanaians in the UK, Nigerians in the UK and other Africans living in Britain, the UK continues to provide opportunities that would have been difficult to access elsewhere. While life in the UK comes with challenges such as rising living costs, expensive housing and increasing financial pressure, many Africans in the UK have built successful careers, purchased homes, started businesses and created opportunities for future generations. Their experiences paint a very different picture from the idea that the UK is a scam. The reality is that life in the UK is not the same for everyone. Some people arrive in Britain and struggle to find stability. Others arrive and gradually build successful lives through education, employment, entrepreneurship and long-term planning. This difference in outcomes has created an ongoing debate within the African diaspora about responsibility, expectations and what success abroad actually looks like. Is the UK failing people, or are some people failing to take advantage of the opportunities available to them? In this episode, we speak with a man who has lived in the UK for over 20 years and completely rejects the idea that Britain is a scam. After spending more than two decades building his life in the UK, he believes the opportunities available in Britain helped shape his future and improve his quality of life. In fact, he says he would never choose Africa over the UK. His perspective stands in sharp contrast to many of the conversations currently taking place across the African diaspora. This discussion explores life in the UK, migration realities, success, personal responsibility, opportunity, wealth creation, quality of life and why different Africans abroad can have completely different experiences despite living in the same country. It is an honest conversation about expectations, outcomes and the growing divide between those who believe the UK was worth it and those who believe it was not. Topics discussed include: Africans in the UK Life in the UK African diaspora experiences Ghanaians in the UK Nigerians in the UK African migrants in Britain UK cost of living Building wealth in the UK Life abroad realities The truth about life in the UK African diaspora conversations If you're an African living in the UK, part of the wider African diaspora or interested in honest conversations about migration, success, opportunity and the reality of life abroad, this episode offers a perspective that challenges many popular narratives.
