Lyrics were written back in 1972 as an epic poem by a friend, Joyce Babel, who gave them to me as a gift, stenciled on parchment paper. I still have it today and its hung in my studio preserved under glass. I wrote original music to it (when I was about 18 or so) , then later recorded it with solo guitar and a female vocalist friend at a local musician's home studio. I submitted it to the American Song Festival but it didn't win. And I still have that song on cassette! Fast forward to 2025 – I wrote and recorded a multi-track instrumental epic called The Voyage. I was looking at the original poem and realized that the 3rd movement of The Voyage would fit the poem much better than my original music, although strangely enough several melody lines were very similar, (proof of composer's style). I uploaded the merger/revision to SUNO Premiere and once again SUNO was the perfect backup orchestral band that otherwise would have cost tens of thousands of dollars to score, arrange and produce. SUNO is to me as George Martin was for the Beatles.
