That's the claim of the outlandish theory of quantum immortality, which we explore in this video, examining its origins, consequences, and the arguments that support or refute it. Please note that the topics discussed in this video are highly speculative and should not be taken literally. You'll see later in the video that quantum immortality is by no means synonymous with invincibility. At the heart of this idea lies the many-worlds theory, an interpretation of quantum mechanics proposed by Hugh Everett III, according to which reality constantly branches into an infinite number of paths, where all states of matter exist. Everett was convinced that this guaranteed him a form of immortality, the universe pushing him onto branches where his consciousness survived. But this fascinating idea also has many detractors, including among the most fervent proponents of the many-worlds theory. Max Tegmark, David Deutsch, Sean Carroll, Lev Vaidman, David Papineau… all have offered arguments against this unfalsifiable and unprovable theory. The philosopher David Lewis, for his part, established that it has a “terrifying corollary”: while consciousness necessarily follows a branch where it survives, it doesn't necessarily follow branches where everything is fine. Quantum immortality is thus perhaps a true curse. Taken to its extreme, and to the terror of some on Reddit, quantum immortality coupled with transhumanism could be synonymous with an infinite existence, until the heat death of the universe.
