Restaurants and Spots We Wish Were Still Around | Texas Country Reporter
This week, we're sharing some old TCR stories from beloved businesses that are no longer in operation. Though their doors may be closed, the impact they left on us is strong. We hope this collection encourages viewers like you to stop by local restaurants and shops to support the fine folks strengthening communities all over Texas. Burnt Biscuit | Episode # 805 | Originally aired in 2003 The Texas Country Reporter crew was awake bright and early to meet Shirley in remote Marathon, Texas. She was always up and at 'em well before sunrise. Shirley and her daughter made hot coffee, donuts, fried pies, and even reported the desert's weather conditions to the national service from their family-owned bakery. Shirley loved to give a warm smile to the early-rising cowboys who stopped in for sausage biscuits. Texas Basket Company | Episode # 1644 | Originally aired in 2019 Hand-weaving up to 6000 baskets a day, the Texas Basket Company in Jacksonville was never afraid of being old-fashioned. They were in operation for a hundred years, priding themselves on a quality product made start to finish in the Piney Woods. Allen's Fried Chicken | Episode # 1266 | Originally aired in 2012 When's the last time you had a family-style meal? At nine bucks a plate from his grandma's original kitchen table, you could've filled yourself to the gills at Allen's with potatoes, green beans, rolls, peach cobbler, and (of course) fried chicken. Allen's was the gem of Sweetwater where strangers would mosey in, pass plates, and leave with the good feelings that can only come from supper together at a family table. Brewster's Pizza | Episode # 1627 | Originally aired in 2018 Ex-NFL player, Bruce Collie, had to get creative about his career following 2008's economic recession. His solution: pizza and beer. Brewster's Pizza, staffed entirely by the Collie family's 13 children, brewed its own beer and tossed its own crust in a family-friendly Hill Country atmosphere.
