The Central Maritime Investigation Board concluded that the cause of the Sewol sinking was a "defect in the vessel itself." However, the shipping company, Cheonghaejin Shipping, appealed this decision and filed a lawsuit. Their reason was that the board ignored the "possibility of external forces" previously raised by the Special Investigation Commission on the Sewol Ferry Disaster. Although a legal ruling has been issued stating that the Yoo Byung-eun family must bear the massive costs incurred in managing the aftermath of the Sewol Ferry disaster, zero won has yet to be recovered. They are awaiting a decision from the Constitutional Court regarding the amount of compensation, but there has been no news for over two years.
