To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the JR Kobe Line in 2024, we'll be introducing the incredible history of the Shin-kaisoku train. The Shin-kaisoku is the Kansai region's most iconic railway. JR West's pride and joy, the Shin-kaisoku, spans Fukui, Shiga, Kyoto, Osaka, and Hyogo prefectures. The Shin-kaisoku, which runs between Tsuruga (Fukui Prefecture) and Banshu-Ako (Hyogo Prefecture), is known as JR's longest local train (train fare only, no express fare required). Its travel distance is 275.5 km. Furthermore, it boasts a top speed of 130 km/h, making it a unique commuter train and free express service in the country. This article will explore the history and evolution of the Shin-kaisoku, from its predecessor, the legendary pre-war free express train, the Kansai Express, also known as the Kansai Express, to today's latest Shin-kaisoku.
