The troupe was founded on January 20, 1998. Originally consisting of six members, it has grown to 20 members (as of 2010). While we continue to fumble our way through life, our motto is "etiquette first." We continue to nurture young people and pass on the local art of Kagura, focusing on Asuna-style Kajiyate Kagura, while never forgetting our roots. Ritual dance, classical Kagura (old dance), new Kagura (new dance). With this history in mind, I would like to understand its meaning and savor the hardships and spirit of our ancestors. *Asu-na style...Iwami Kagura, which originally had six syllables, was modified to eight syllables in the Hamada region. This style then spread to eastern Iwami and entered what is now Asuna, Usumi Village, Ochi District. There, it was further modified by the Asuna priests, the Mikami clan, resulting in a uniquely developed branch of Iwami Kagura. The complex plot was made simple and straightforward so that even farmers could understand, and the speeches were also made clear and straightforward. Today, old Asuna-na style dances are handed down in places such as Usumi Village in Shimane Prefecture, Sakugi Village in Hiroshima Prefecture, and northern Takamiya Town. *Kajiyate...This style of dance, part of the Asuna line, was passed down to the Kajiya Kagura Troupe of Kawane, Takamiya Town, by the Asuna priest Saito, and is still passed down today. Its distinctive features remain strong in ceremonial dances and older dances such as Kami-dori, Ama-no-Iwato, Jinrin, and Shoki. The Miyanoki Kagura Troupe's Kami-Koushi was directly taught to them by Kajiya Kagura Troupe's Tsuyoshi Hoai. *What is the Nohara district of Asa-cho, where the troupe is located? It is located in the northern part of Hiroshima City, a designated city, and is home to facilities such as the Asa Zoo and the Youth Outdoor Activities Center. Nohara Hachiman Shrine, the troupe's base of operations, is located in the middle of the Ota River system, just uphill from Iimori, which once thrived as a post town. The surrounding area is Morishiro Heights, and, along with Asahigaoka and Hoshigaoka, it was developed as a bedroom community for Hiroshima City. However, within this area, the Nohara district is dotted with old houses, preserving its traditional scenery. The Miyanoki Kagura Troupe began as a new kagura troupe in this area, and despite the ongoing depopulation and aging population, it has continued to receive warm support from the local community. We will continue to work hard and enjoy the spring festival, summer festival, and dedication ceremony together with the people who have cherished and protected this region. ■Performance 👹 Hiroshima Kagura 🌀 Original Kagura "Mt. Ibuki" Yamato Takeru, also known as Yamato Okunamikoto, the second son of Emperor Keikō, the twelfth emperor of Japan, received an imperial command from his father, the emperor, to defeat Kawakami Fukuro, the leader of the Kumaso tribe in Kyushu. Upon accomplishing this, he returned to the capital, where he received a new imperial command to defeat the Emishi in the eastern provinces, which he easily subdued. On his return, he received a new imperial command. It called for the slaying of the ever-changing demons, foxes, and snakes that had holed up on Mount Ibuki in Omi Province. Mr. Takeru, accompanied by his retainer Kenyan, a bathhouse attendant, headed to Mount Ibuki, where he successfully defeated the demons, foxes, and snakes. ■Kagura in Hiroshima Prefecture Kagura is performed in many different ways in various parts of Japan. It is believed that the kagura in Hiroshima developed in the Edo period from Iwami Kagura, which had evolved from Izumo kagura. Izumo kagura is composed of ritual dances, which show the procedures to invite the advent of gods, and Noh dances, which dramatize the admiration of the virtues of gods in order to thank them for having descended from heaven.
