Beetle Cat Regatta August 7, 2022
This a series of video clips of a Beetle Cat Regatta held on August 6-7, 2022. It was sponsored by Edgewood Yacht Club in Cranston, Rhode Island. It was made possible by an invitation from George Shuster. A special thanks to Ted Westscott for driving me around to take the video clips and photographs. This event allowed me to re-connect with Edgewood Yacht Club, which is where my grandfather, Wendell S. Brown, took me sailing from the late 1950's until he died in 1969. My dad and his brother walked the beaches in 1938 after the hurricane and discovered eight badly damaged Beetle Cats. They brought the remains of the eight boats home and built one good one. They named it "Pieces of Eight". For several years they raced it out of Edgewood Yacht Club. In 1946 my dad's two younger sisters raced Pieces of Eight in a major regatta and came in first. This was nothing short of amazing as it was not common for girls to race... never mind kick the boys butts. The Pieces of Eight story was published in the July/August 2022 issue of Sail Magazine. This video was made in memory of Pieces of Eight, John M. Brown, Charles Brown, Genevieve Brown, and Marjorie Brown.
