Salim Kumar was born on 10 October 1969 in Chittattukara, North Paravur, the youngest son of Gangadharan and Kausalya. His father, who was an atheist and a follower of his brother Ayyappan, named him Salim to avoid any association with any religion. The suffix "Kumar" was added later at the request of the school authorities. Kumar studied at Government LPS, Chittattukara, and after his pre-degree at SNM College, Malyankara, he attended Government Boys' High School, North Paravur. Due to his mimicry skills and desire to work in the film industry, Salim Kumar joined the BA program at Maharaja's College, Ernakulam, and won the Mahatma Gandhi University mimicry title three times in a row. Before joining Cochin Sagar, he started his mimicry career at Cochin Kalabhavan. He was also a presenter on Asianet's comedy show Comicola. He performed professional theatre for four years at the Aarti Theatres in Kochi. Widely regarded as one of the most prominent and influential actors in Malayalam cinema history, he acted in over 300 films in a career spanning three decades. Kumar lived in a house called "Laughing Villa" in North Paravur in 2010 for his role in the film Adaminte Makan Abu. He and his wife Sunitha won the National Film Award for Best Actor. He has two sons, Salim Kumar and Aromal, from Ernakulam district. He was a member and staunch supporter of the Indian National Congress in Kerala. He has written a memoir titled Eeshwara Vazhakkillello. He ran a mimicry troupe called Cochin Stallions, which introduced film and serial actor Ramesh Pisharody and several other talents. His son Chandu is an actor who has acted in films such as Manjummal Boys (2024). On the morning of 6 June 2026, Kumar was admitted to Amrita Hospital in Kochi due to physical difficulties and was put on a ventilator after his health deteriorated. He was later declared dead at 10:43 pm the same day. The funeral was held at his residence with official honours. As per his wishes, the cremation was carried out without religious ceremonies. Salim Kumar reportedly instructed that no post-mortem ceremonies, including immersion of the ashes, be held. The body was taken to the cremation ground after being draped in the Indian National Congress flag. His sons Chandu and Aromal lit the pyre. The function was attended by Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan, All India Congress Committee General Secretary K.C.
