Florida's Treasure Coast stretches from Vero Beach in the north, south as far as roughly Hobe Sound and Jupiter Island, spanning Indian River, St. Lucie and Martin Counties. The region gets its name from the 1715 Spanish Treasure Fleet. Eleven ships carrying silver, gold, and jewels from the New World to Spain were wrecked off the coast during a massive hurricane. To this day, artifacts and gold coins are still occasionally found on the beaches and in the waters after major storms. The Treasure Coast is known for a slower, more relaxed pace than the busy Gold Coast coastline to its south, with stricter building height restrictions and abundant nature preserves.
